Glossary of Project Management Terms

This glossary is presented as a work in progress until The PMBOK Refresher has been completed. Keep in mind that many terms are generic in nature, so the definitions applied here are in the context of project management.

A

aligned.  supporting an objective.

E

element.1. an abstract reference to a thing belonging to a project, program, or portfolio. 2. a task, resource, or objective belonging to a project, program, or portfolio. 3. synonymous to a member of a project, program, or portfolio.

G

governance.1. policies and procedures that control and direct an organization. 2. policies and procedures that control and direct a project, program, or portfolio. 3. may be unique to a particular organizational level or business operation.

M

member.1. an abstract reference to a thing belonging to a project, program, or portfolio. 2. a task, resource, or objective belonging to a project, program, or portfolio. 3. synonymous to an element.

O

objective.1. a goal, target, purpose, aim, or end. 2. a thing which work is directed towards 3. a product to be produced. 4. a service to be performed. 5. a result to be obtained. also see strategic objective and organizational objective. 6. an objective that is subordinate to a strategic objective.

organization.1. the owner of the project, program, or portfolio. 2. a set, collection, or body of people sharing the same business objective. 3. a corporation, company, division, department, or team.

organizational objective.1. a goal, target, purpose, aim, end, or result for an organization. 2. may or may not be strategic. Also see objective and strategic objective.

organizational strategy.1. the primary plans and their objectives for an organization. 2. a strategic plan for an organization. 3. if the organization is under the control of another organization, the strategy is aligned with and supports the higher ranking organization’s strategy.

P

plan.1. a detailed proposal for achieving an objective. 2. an intention or decision about what is going to be done. 3. a procedure, scheme, or strategy. 4. actions and their objectives. 5. a plan that is subordinate to a strategic plan.

performing organization.1. the name for an organization whose personnel are most directly involved in doing the work of the project 2. the organization who assigns projects to a project manager.

program plan.1. a detailed proposal for achieving a program objective. 2. subordinate to a portfolio plan and strategic plan. 3. may be aligned with a portfolio objective. 4. is aligned with a strategic objective.

project plan.1. a detailed proposal for achieving a project objective. 2. subordinate to a strategic plan. 3. may be aligned with a program objective or portfolio objective. 4. is aligned with a strategic objective. 5. can be used for producing other plans, such as a strategic plan.

portfolio plan.1. a detailed proposal for achieving a portfolio objective. 2. subordinate to a strategic plan. 3. is aligned with a strategic objective.

strategic objective.1. a primary objective. 2. most important objective. 3. an overall objective. 4. may be short-term or long-term. 5. in an organization having a hierarchy of objectives, this is at the top of the hierarchy. 6. in a hierarchy of objectives, all subordinate objectives are aligned with and supporting the strategic objective.

strategic plan.1. primary plans and their objectives. 2. most important plan. 3. an overall plan. 4. may be short-term or long-term. 5. in an organization having a hierarchy of plans, this is at the top of the hierarchy. 6. in a hierarchy of plans, all subordinate plans are aligned with and supporting the strategic plan.
